OPTICis an organized approach for examining visual or graphic text more closely. There are five parts: Overview, Parts, Title, Interrelationships, and Conclusion.

O is for Overview.

  • Conduct a brief overview of the main subject of the visual.

· What do you see in the painting?

· What do you notice about the colors in the painting?

P is for Parts.

  • Scrutinize the parts of the visual.

  • Note any elements or details that seem important.

· What else do you notice about the colors?

· What can you say about the girls’ attire?

· What can you say about the direction of their eyes?

T is for Title.

  • Read the title or caption of the visual (if present) for added information.

I is for Interrelationships.

· How does the title connect to the work?

· Share the title of the work.

· What new information does the title reveal?

· How does the title connect with the work itself?

· Why do you think the author chose that title?

C is for Conclusion.

· Draw a conclusion about the meaning of the visual as a whole.

· Summarize the message in one or two sentences.

· What message is this painter conveying about human behavior? (specifically, sisterhood, unity)
